Celine Dion Health: The Rare Condition She’s Battling, Her Prior Ailments, and How She’s Feeling Now

Canadian singer Celine Dion, renowned for her powerful and emotive voice, has faced numerous health challenges throughout her illustrious career. In recent years, she has been diagnosed with a rare condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which primarily affects her muscles and bones. This condition adds to her long list of health issues that have forced her to postpone or cancel performances.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

EDS is a group of disorders that affect the connective tissues supporting the skin, bones, blood vessels, and other organs. These disorders can be inherited or acquired. Celine Dion was diagnosed with this condition in 2015 after experiencing symptoms such as chronic pain, fatigue, and joint instability for several years (Mayo Clinic). There are six main types of EDS, each with varying symptoms and severity levels (National Institutes of Health). Celine Dion is believed to have the hypermobile type of EDS (NIH). This form is characterized by excessive joint mobility and flexibility.

Prior Ailments

Before being diagnosed with EDS, Celine Dion had undergone various surgeries due to other health issues. In 1994, she underwent surgery for a cyst on her right middle finger that required a skin graft (People). In 1998, she had a quadruple bypass heart surgery following complications from pregnancy (CNN). In 2003, she underwent laser surgery on her vocal cords due to hemorrhaging caused by overuse (People). And in 2014, she had hip replacement surgery due to arthritis caused by EDS (Entertainment Weekly).

Current Health Status

Despite her health challenges, Celine Dion continues to perform when possible. In an interview with “Good Morning America,” she shared that she feels “better than ever” since being diagnosed with EDS and receiving proper treatment (ABC News). She also mentioned that she has learned to listen to her body and take care of herself better than before. However, she acknowledged that there will always be good days and bad days when it comes to managing her condition. Her upcoming residency shows at Resorts World Las Vegas are scheduled to begin in February 2023 (Billboard).
