"Now that we've learned about subjects and predicates, I'd like to talk about main subjects and main predicates."

It's a cold, clear, West Coast autumn night. The frost is sparkling on the bushes. The waves are lapping against the dark shore. The last remaining cricket of the season seems to have a bit of a shiver in his chirp. Through the picture window we see that the inside of the beach cottage is submerged in deep blue shadows, except for the dancing orange light of a friendly fire. Marie rocks gently in her chair beside it and uses examples from sample sentences to teach us how to reduce the subject and the predicate to the main subject and the main predicate.

"The main subject is the one word that tells us what the sentence is about. The main predicate is the one word that tells us what the subject does."
