Hans Sitt, son of a famous violin maker and a Bohemian by birth, was a violinist, violist, conductor, teacher and composer who published in German-speaking countries and held positions as a violinist and conductor of theater orchestras in Breslau, Prague, and Chemnitz. He was a violist in the famous Brodsky Quartet, and became professor of violin at the Leipzig Conservatory. He was well-known for conducting the Bachverein (1885-1903) and other musical societies. Although he is best known for his basic etude books and three student concertinos that are still widely used by students today, he wrote at least three violin concertos (Albert Wier, writing in 1937, mentioned nine), a viola concerto, and two cello concertos. His violin compositions are all scholarly and dignified works that fall readily under the fingers of typical violinists and violists, and some of the slow movements from his concertos, such as this one, display evidences of real genius. There is evidence that this movement was once used as special music in church services, sometimes with organ accompaniment.
