How Blood Donations Help A Young Sickle Cell Patient – Partnering with A Purpose

Students who have sickle cell disease, like Dreylan, can experience social isolation as a result of missing school and extracurricular activities due to pain crises, doctor appointments and medical procedures. But family, friends and mentors can play an important role in positive health outcomes for them.

That’s why the American Red Cross is launching its fall activation “Joined by Blood” and teaming up with community organizations dedicated to mentorship to host blood drives and serve as advocates in support of patients with sickle cell disease – the most common genetic blood disorder in the U.S.

Blood transfusions are critical to helping Dreylan manage extreme pain, attend school, complete homework assignments, and enjoy his favorite past times with friends and his devoted mother, Vesha.
One in three blood donors who are Black are a match for people with sickle cell disease.

You can help meet the transfusion needs of patients by scheduling an appointment to give blood
