Peruvian demonstrators clashed with police in Lima on Thursday during a second day of street protests against President Alberto Fujimori's administration.

Around 10-thousand demonstrators took the street marching towards Congress to protest at the government's economic policies.

The march was organised by the Peruvian General Workers Union (CGTP).

Violence began after thousands of protesters heading towards Congress came face to face with riot police lined up to halt them.

Although the march, going from the Union's headquarters to the Congress, had been given official permission, police suddenly halted the protesters a few blocks from the Congress building, provoking anger among the demonstrators.

Protestors then tried to force their way through, beating police with heavy sticks.

The police responded by throwing tear gas.

Among the protesters were union members and students protesting against Fujimori's economic policies.

Opposition leaders later joined the march as it made its way to the front of Congress.

Some were shouting "Democratia SI, Dictaturia NO" opposing the removal last week by Congress of three judges, who were blocking a possible third election bid by Fujimori.

The President is currently required to step down at the end of the present mandate - a situation he is trying to change.

His political opponents accuse him of trying to force through the changes on the back of a recent rise in his popularity.

The Peruvian General Workers Union (CGTP), who organised Thursday's march, has called a general strike for early next week.
