Everybody loves a good villain redemption, it's basically like the writer flexing on his audience. You know this douche bag, the one who did a triple kick flip over a basket of puppies after he lit them on fire and blew up an orphanage? I'm gonna make you feel bad for him, no scratch that, I'm going to make him into a good guy, and you're gonna be rooting for him by the time we're done here. How do you like them apples? And as it turns out, we really really like those apples. Obviously the best example is Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender...
