The art of the Protestant nations of Northern Europe during the Baroque period reflects the cultural differences from their Catholic counterparts of Italy and Spain. As many Protestant churches discouraged or banned the use of large images as idolatrous, artists, lacking large artistic commissions from the church, instead depended on the patronage of individuals (both aristocratic and not) and businesses. This means that the often large scale religious works associated with the Catholic Counter-reformation are not common in the art of place like the Netherlands. Instead, smaller intimate scenes (both religious and secular) appear to be more common. Also, the intense drama associate with Catholic art of this period is often down-played for a quieter, more introspective style. Dutch artists like Rembrandt, Verneer, Hals and Leyster will create often psychologically introspective works that are as much concerned with internalized emotional states than grand, dramatic scenarios.

This is not to say that large-scale, emotional narrative do not exist in Northern European Baroque art. Artists like Reubens exhibits a grandeur and theatricality comparative to Caravaggio. Likewise, the art associated with the absolute monarchs, like King Louis XIV of France, exhibit exaggerated an exaggerated style and often over-the-top narrative to bolster the grandness and power of monarchy.
