Oh boy. Map 29: Ascension. The local slaughtermap of this map set. Fire one shot and you alert all 2000-or-so demons. Even with vanilla Doom this map will hurt your framerate (and believe me, I've tried). With a mod that adds all kind of fancy effects and additional drops upon demon death (money in various forms), and it doesn't get much better. Altho, compared to other mods I've tried this map set with, this is a pretty decent framerate.
Anyway, the portal to earth is in sight; we just need to make our way to the top of a mountain. (Un)fortunately, the demons disagree with this notion and throw everything including various kitchen sinks at you to stop you from reaching the top. Time to whip out our heaviest weaponry, and let them know not to come between a Dragon and his R&R...
The new Guncaster 3.0 release expands massively on the previous version. In this mod for Doom 2, you play as a Wazard-hating Dragon that can carry around enough firepower to take on Hell's legions several times over with ease. For the 3.0 release some changes have been made to your arsenal. The Cauterizer plasma thrower (for lack of a better term) has been replaced by the Augur, which is the love child of a portable railgun and a plasma cannon. The Strucker shotgun has been upgraded to version III, with a spiffy new look.
The 'caster' part of Guncaster has also received some updates. Several new spells are available for you to (ab)use, while various existing spells have been modified.
Besides the guns and the spells, a whole new range of pickups and modifiers have been added, designed to boost your weapons, spells, or your melee attacks in one way or another. Not all can be bought from the ingame shop: some have to be 'liberated' from the various boss monsters you encounter.
For this series, I have changed the monster modifier to LegenDoom Lite edition. On first glance it won't change anything; your monsters still look like in good ol' Doom. However, various monsters on the map will be marked as 'legendary'. If you bring a legendary monster to half-health, they will become legendary (you wouldn't say), with a massive modifier to health and damage they can deal. The upside is when you kill a legendary they drop additional goodies.
You can modify the boosts the legendaries receive, and how often a monster will be marked as legendary on a map. To counter Guncaster's arsenal, I beefed the occurrence of legendaries up a bit from the default.
Lastly, the map set. Hellbound is my personal favourite map set. I happen to come across it one day, decided to play it, and was hooked. It offers large, detailed maps, ranging from urban battles, UAC facilities, and various hellish fortresses. The maps also try to link into each other, where the end of one map is referenced to at the start of the next map. All in all, a highly recommended map set if you look for a megawad.
