Health and Wellness (Patient Reported) Outcome Measures for Healthcare: Therapists, Nurses, & more

As occupational therapy practitioners, we all know the importance of promoting health, wellness, participation and a good quality of life. It's in our scope of practice. It's in our practice framework. It's everywhere and part of our role as healthcare practitioners is to be on the same team when it comes to speaking the same language.

Outcome measures are one way of seeing if we are doing what we are saying we are doing as OTs. So how do we measure if we are promoting health and wellness? One way is through the subjective experience of our clients such as through interview and the COPM. But there are many other beneficial outcome measures in the wild outside of OT.

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS). This video introduces PROMS that are widely used in healthcare in the US (and probably globally as well). These are mostly free, easily accessible, easy to administer, and relatively easy to score. By becoming familiar with these PROMs, you will be a valuable member of the team to contribute, interpret, and promote the client's health and wellness as well as their quality of life.
