A general overview of the Book of 2 Samuel is that it is the sequel to 1 Samuel, and contains the history of David's reign as king of the united nation of Israel. It is a vivid account of how David, in an effort to extend his kingdom and consolidate his position of power, had to struggle with enemies from within the nation as well as with foreign powers without.

David is shown to be a man of deep faith and devotion to God, which resulted in him winning the loyalty of his people. On the other hand, the book also shows a more sinister side of David, with him on several occasions displaying a corrupt and brutal nature where he would sometimes commit terrible sins in order to serve his own desires and ambitions. However when he is confronted by the Lord's prophet Nathan regarding these evil acts, he quickly confesses and accepts the punishment that God decrees.

The life and achievements of David had such a lasting impact on the people of Israel that for many generations to come, they would always use him as the standard of measurement for future kings, with the expectation that their ultimate king (Messiah or Christ) would be "A son of David". This "Son of David" was the title given to Jesus on many occasions in the New Testament (see: Matthew 1:1, 12:23, 15:22, 21:9).
