This track powered ten wheeler came with a factory fitted sound unit powered by a 9v PP3 battery in the tender and unfortunately it had stopped working. So it was decided to keep it track powered and install a new sound unit. I installed the Piko 36220 American steam sound kit which works on DC as well as DCC, the decoder senses the supply. This video shows it working on analogue DC. As well as having the whistle and bell sounds automatically generated when it moves away, these sounds also work by placing a magnet between the rails triggering reed switches underneath the loco. As you can hear there are many random sounds. When used with DCC it will work like any other DCC sound card and all the sounds are adjustable. It just about manages R1 curves, looks very uncomfortable and doesn't run too well on the full circle, but outdoor running is out of the question at the moment due to the poor weather.
