Ghost Towns & Historic Mines: Red Mountain Mining District, Colorado 🏔️🚗⛏️📸

Step back in time with us and experience the rugged beauty and rich history of the Red Mountain Mining District in southwest Colorado, roughly halfway between the towns of Ouray and Silverton. This area is packed with fascinating history, stunning mountain views, and a few ghost towns that’ll give you a glimpse into what life was like during the silver mining boom. 🏔️🚗⛏️📸

We start our journey in the small, charming town of Ouray and take a drive along the famous Million Dollar Highway. Get ready for some jaw-dropping scenery—the Million Dollar Highway offers some of the most stunning views in Colorado, but it's not for the faint-hearted!

Our first stop is at Ironton, where we check out two different sites. There’s a smaller spot right off the highway, and the official Ironton Townsite just up the road. We'll also stop at the Red Mountain Overlook to soak in panoramic views of the region, including the historic Yankee Girl Mine, and visit a few buildings from the mining era.

Then, we head off on a dirt road to explore some of the old mines that made this area famous. You’ll see the Longfellow Mine, National Belle Mine, Genessee Mine, Yankee Girl Mine, and what’s left of the once-popular Red Mountain Town and its less formal neighbor, Guston.
