The past tenses in French can be complicated, and give us French learners a mal de tête !

When should you use the imparfait over the passé composé tense in French?
When should you choose the passé composé over the imparfect tense in French?

How do you decide which past tense in French to use?

In this video I talk about how to do just that, and also my tips for those of you who want to learn them both at once, as well as tricks to help you choose when you can't quite remember all the logic and rules I teach you in the main part of the video.

Trigger words:

Imparfait:

chaque semaine, mois, année - every week, month, year
le lundi, le mardi… - on Mondays, on Tuesdays…
le week-end - on the weekends
tous les jours - every day
le matin, le soir - in the mornings, in the evenings
toujours - always (in the past)
normalement, d’habitude - usually
en général, généralement - in general, generally
souvent - often
parfois, quelquefois - sometimes
de temps en temps - from time to time
rarement - rarely
autrefois - formerly

Passé composé:

une semaine, un mois, un an - one week, month, year
un week-end one weekend
lundi, mardi… - on Monday, on Tuesday
un jour - one day
un matin, un soir - one morning, one evening
toujours - always (and still now)
plusieurs fois - several times
une fois, deux fois… - once, twice…
soudain, soudainement - suddenly
tout à coup - all of a sudden
tout d’un coup - in one fell swoop
d’abord - first
ensuite, puis - next, then
enfin - finally
finalement - in the end
