Does Speech Level Singing Work for Rock?

In this episode, I explain the differences between classical voice technique and Speech Level Singing when it comes to singing Rock and Metal music.

Speech Level Singing, or SLS, works just fine for lighter singing styles like Pop, Country, R&B, but when it comes to wanting a HUGE voice for Rock, Hard Rock or Metal - the winner is Classical technique.

Fellow Vocal Coach Ken Tamplin says "SLS Doesn't Work", but I don't think he really understands that not a lot of people sing with that huge, bluesy sound he does so well. Today's music is a bit lighter vocally and less bombastic than it was in the 70s and 80s. Today's modern singer is more Sam Smith than David Coverdale.

Speech Level Singing is designed exactly for singing lighter singing styles. SLS simply does cut it for Hard Rock and Metal.
