LEADIN:
Windows in more than 150 abandoned buildings in a triangle of upstate New York cities have been fitted with light-emitting diodes that steadily brighten and fade, giving the effect of slow breathing.
The novel public art project provides something pretty for grittier neighbourhoods as it shines a light, figuratively and literally, on the problems posed by vacant brownstones and clapboard homes.
STORYLINE:
When the sun goes down, abandoned homes in upstate New York begin to glow.
Every night, the lights fade in and out to illuminate the problem of empty buildings in the cities of Albany, Schenectady and Troy.
Artist, Adam Frelin thought up the "Breathing Lights" project with architect Barbara Nelson and won a $1 million public arts grant.
Organisers say the money came from an arts grant and add that a million dollars could only rescue four houses.
