In June 2024, the Sussex Digital Humanities Lab held a research symposium, entitled All Consuming AI: Societal & Cultural Impacts. This presentation is part of the last series of panel discussions of the day which focused on AI Behaviours, exploring human versus AI paradigms via agency in the face of brain-computer interfaces, authentication and authenticity, AI morality and more.

The abstract for this presentation by Professor Walter Sinnot Armstrong, Chauncey Stillman Distinguished Professor of Practical Ethics at Duke University, is as follows:

The good news is that AI can bring many great benefits to us all. The bad news is that AI can also cause harm, invade privacy, exacerbate social injustice, and undermine responsibility. This talk will outline our book’s proposals about how to gain the benefits of AI while reducing its moral dangers. It will focus on our novel method for building idealized human morality into AI systems.
