Dibalik Buku: The Sociology of the Indonesian Novel 1920–1955

This brief account, drawn from C W Watson’s 1972 MA thesis, of the origins and development of the Indonesian novel argues that the origins of modern Indonesian literature at the end of the 19th century are closely tied to the increasing availability of modern printing presses, the creation of an indigenous language press and to the influence of Western literary forms, in particular the novel. The Dutch colonial government’s newly announced Ethical Policy at the beginning of the 20th century which, among other initiatives, emphasised the need programmes of education to be made available to a broader swathe of the indigenous population than hitherto, was another catalyst that stimulated the publication of prose materials both text books and manuals as well as works of what were regarded as ‘wholesome’ fiction. To provide the latter the Dutch governement set up the influential publishing house Balai Pustaka that developed an extensive outreach programme throughout the archipelago.

In the 1930s Indonesian writers, wanting to work outside the constraints of BP, but very much influenced by the Western literary forms they had been exposed to, established the literary journal 𝘗𝘶𝘥𝘫𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘨𝘢 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘶 which was highly influential and set the tone for socio-political debates of the time. The description of the further development of the novel takes in the period of the ‘Revolusi’ and ends with the emergence of realistic fiction, modelled on modern Western novels of the time, dealing with political, religious and social issues that were then coming to the fore in the newly formed Republic.

Besides offering a brief account of the literary history of this sixty year period, a critical evaluation of representative novels at each significant stage of development is offered to exemplify the way in which new literary tendencies found expression: 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘩 𝘗𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘩 for the BP period, 𝘓𝘢𝘫𝘢𝘳 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘨 and 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘨𝘶 for 𝘗𝘶𝘥𝘫𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘨𝘢 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘶 and 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘫𝘢 and 𝘔𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘩 𝘚𝘪 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘨𝘪 𝘌𝘮𝘢𝘴 for the post-war generation.
