TEM vs. HRTEM

TEM stands for transmission electron microscopy.
HRTEM stands for high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Sometimes, also refer as HREM

The beauty of both techniques is that we see images such as the shape of the sample such as nanoparticles, nanofiber, etc, the size of the nanoparticle, the size of the grain etc as seeing is believing

Both TEM and HRTEM are useful techniques and use electrons as probes to explore the materials properties such as morphological*, *compositional*, and *crystallographic information.

Both TEM and HRTEM use the interaction of energetic electrons with the sample and work on the scattering or diffraction principle

In TEM, the magnification of the image can go up to 1.5 million times, while in HRTEM, the images magnify more than the TEM

The resolution of TEM can go up to 0.2 nm while the resolution of HRTEM can go up to 0.05 nm

The 0.2 nm is a typical distance between two atoms in any solid material.

In TEM, only the transmitted electron is used to create images, while in HRTEM, both the transmitted and the scattered beam electrons are used to create images

Uses and Application of TEM and HRTEM:

There are numerous uses, but I will list a few of them
Crystal structures identification
Shape of the particle
impurities such as point defects, stacking faults, and dislocations
Precipitates grain boundaries
Surface structures such as smooth or rough or porous or solid

Working Principle:

Both TEM and HRTEM work on the principle of electron diffraction. In the end, electrons are converted into light, and an image of the sample is formed.
