Here are of mine and my friends tips for vintage computer repairs. Below is a list which I will go over in this video.

Vintage Computing Repairs

Look - look for defective parts an\or things out of place
** Clean board with rubbing alcohol, old tooth brush and cotton rage
Burnt capacitors
Burnt resistors
Burnt\blown diodes
Blown fuses
Missing IC\chips or other missing parts
Bad soldering
Cracked solder joints or on the board
Wires hanging out
Shorts. On top, bottom and ports

Smell - are there strange smells which are not from bug, mice, etc?
Look for blown capacitors like RIFA capacitors in the power supply
Check keyboard for liquid splits like drinks and\or animals presents, like urine

Power - check voltages
Power supply outputs
On the board, voltage regulators - check regulators specifications for pinouts and voltages

Feel - do any IC (chips) feel hot? If so, replace
CPU, Memory, Support IC\chips

Listen - listen to the boot up sounds
Normal start up sounds like on Apple II series, Commodore PET 4000 series, Apple Macintosh chimes. ** Some computers like C64, Timex Sinclair, etc have no boot up sounds. Strange noises from power supply, video section and monitor

Diagnose
Run built in diagnostics if available. Apple IIe, IIc, Atari 600XL, 800XL and other have built in diagnostic
Check signals -CPU, Memory, Video, Control logic
Use diagnostic software, cartridges, adapters, etc.
