Manufacturers of lifting platforms, mobile cranes and other applications where height and extension are to be monitored are increasingly looking to replace discrete switching sensors at end of travel with those capable of variable position monitoring. This allows for greater flexibility in the uses of the machines, as knowing the exact length and position of supports offers safer control in restricted or otherwise inaccessible locations. In addition, variable height control allows for working heights of jacks and lifts to be set correctly for the ergonomics of the operator using them.

Draw wire position sensors from Micro-Epsilon are a simple yet robust method of measuring displacement, height, position and movement. Often referred to as String Pots, Yo-yo’s and linear transducers, Draw Wire sensors work like an electronic tape measure. Their telescopic properties, where the wire is coiled inside the housing, means that the relative space needed to mount them is kept to a minimum.
