My Elton John Playlist!    • Elton John

In this I'm Still Standing guitar lesson video, I will show you all of the chords and guitar solo to this great Elton John song.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E with a capo at the 1st fret for the rhythm guitar parts. You can still have the capo on your guitar during the solo, but it can also be played without the capo.

There are some great chord progressions in "I'm Still Standing" so I will cover all of those on acoustic guitar during the first half of the video lesson. I am sticking with an arrangement of the piano chords for the whole song instead of teaching some of the actual guitar chords played later in the song. Since this is a piano driven song, I think it sounds better to try and play those chords instead of the more basic guitar chords used as layers throughout the song.

I will be using a capo at the 1st fret for the chord progressions I am teaching on acoustic. This will make this song, which was originally written for piano, much easier to play on the guitar.

One unique element of the chord progressions Elton John wrote for "I'm Still Standing" is that the verse is in Bb major and the chorus is in the parallel minor key of Bb minor. This would usually be the reverse in that you would go to a major key for the chorus. But the way Elton wrote this works perfectly and gives the chorus a still upbeat yet defiant quality.

After the chords, I will then take you through guitarist Davey Johnstone's great solo for "I'm Still Standing". It is a very melodic solo that uses a lot of 6th intervals to great effect.

Have fun learning this Elton John classic! Carl...
