INTERDENTAL SPACE / DENTAL SPACE / SPACE IN BETWEEN TOOTH CLOSING - DR. MOHAMMAD NASER AHAMMED
To close gaps in between teeth, a dentist or orthodontist can recommend orthodontic treatments like braces or clear aligners, which use gradual pressure to move teeth together, or cosmetic procedures, including dental filling, caps, or bridges. The best approach depends on the gap’s size, location, and the underlying cause, which could be gum disease, habits, or a large labial frenum.
Causes:
1. Genetics
2. Habits like thumb sucking
3. Abnormal jaw growth
4. Gum disease
5. Size and shape of teeth relative to the jaw bone
6. Oversized labial frenum ( the tissue connecting the lip to the gums) can push teeth apart, creating gaps.
Types: -
1. Central (At the mid-line of jaws)
2. Space in between other teeth (Generalized spacing)
Methods to Close Spaces Between Teeth: -
There are three ways to close the gap in between teeth. These are as following: -
1. Cosmetic procedures
2. Closing the gap by bringing the adjacent teeth close in contact with braces (Orthodontic treatment)
3. Making artificial teeth to close the gap (If the gap is large enough to fit a tooth)
Explanations of above methods are as follows: -
1. Cosmetic Procedures
i) Dental Composite filling: -
A tooth-colored composite resin (example-. Light cure composite filling)
is applied directly to the teeth to build them up and fill small gaps.
ii) Preparing cap of adjacent teeth of the inter dental space: -
The space in between teeth can be closed by preparing cap of adjacent teeth of the inter dental space.
iii) Dental Bridges:
Inter dental spaces can be closed by preparation of bridge of the adjacent teeth with consideration of the condition
iv) Dental implant: -
Dental implant can also be helpful to replace the missing teeth and the inter dental space closure at the same time.
2. Orthodontic Treatments
Brackets:
In this process brackets and wires are used to apply continuous pressure on teeth, slowly shifting teeth to close the gap over time.
Clear Aligners:-
Removable, transparent aligners, like Invisalign, offer a less visible alternative to braces, gradually moving teeth into their proper position.
3.Making artificial teeth to close the gap (If the gap is large enough to fit a tooth): -
If the gap is large enough to fit a tooth, the inter dental gap can be closed by placing an artificial tooth.
Other Treatments
Frenectomy:
A surgical procedure to remove an enlarged labial frenum (the tissue connecting the lip to the gum) that may be causing a midline diastema.
Gum Disease Treatment:
If advanced gum disease (e.g., Periodontitis, necrotizing periodontal disease, Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis) is causing the gap, treating the periodontal issue is crucial to stabilize the teeth and prevent further tooth loss.
Considerations:
1. Gap Size:
The size of the gap will influence the best treatment option. Smaller gaps may be easily closed with dental filling or caps, while larger gaps may require braces or other restorative procedures.
2. Overall Dental Health:
Factors like bite alignment, jaw structure, and the health of the surrounding teeth will also play a role in determining the most appropriate treatment.
3. Aesthetic Goals:
The patient's desired outcome, such as the desired shape, size, and color of the teeth, will be considered when choosing a treatment option.
4. Cost and Treatment Time:
The cost and duration of treatment can vary depending on the chosen method. Orthodontic treatment, for example, can take longer and be more expensive than composite filling or cap.
It is better to consult with a dentist or orthodontists to determine the best method for closing the gap between our teeth. He can recommend the suitable and effective treatment options after assessing specific condition.
