I don't own any rights for the song or any part of it. But when I was an alien, cultures weren't copyrights.

"Territorial Pissings" originates from the boombox cassette Nirvana recorded in March 1991 in a converted barn equipped with PA in Tacoma while rehearsing new material for the upcoming "Nevermind" session. The cassette was sent to Butch Vig, the album's producer, to get him familiar with the songs he would be recording in a couple of months.

The "Nevermind" sessions started in May 1991, and "Territorial Pissings" was recorded among other songs. That's the final studio version that was included in the album: that's the one I use in the video.

In the intro, Krist is singing part of the 1967 Youngbloods song "Get Together." Kurt wanted an intro, and Vig suggested to put some "stupid hippie shit" in there. "Maybe some baby boomers will hear that and wonder what happened to those ideals," said Novoselic. While talking to a Brazilian newspaper O Globo about these lyrics, Kurt said, "The song speaks of people who join together to be cool and try something new, the ideal contrast to the macho men I'm portraying in "Territorial Pissings". We didn't mean to be offensive to the guy who wrote it. The idea of being positive and causing change in society and the world was appropriated by media, who turned it into something ridiculous, a caricature".

Kurt wanted a dirty and low-fi punk guitar sound, so they split his signal between an amplifier and plugged his distortion pedal right in the control board.

In late 1991 and early 1992 "Territorial Pissings" was performed and recorded for three TV shows: the British "Tonight With Jonathan Ross", and the American "MTV 120 Minutes" and "Saturday Night Live". Those were some memorable performances. On "Tonight With Jonathan Ross" they were told to play "Lithium", ended up playing this song before smashing their equipment and leaving the stage instead. After playing "Territorial Pissings" on "Saturday Night Live" they destroyed their instruments, too.

As for the bassline, notice the variations of the chorus riff Krist is playing in the outro.

Lyrics:

When I was an alien,
Cultures weren't opinions

Gotta find a way, to find a way, when I'm there
Gotta find a way, a better way, I had better wait

Never met a wise man,
If so it's a woman

Gotta find a way, to find a way, when I'm there
Gotta find a way, a better way, I had better wait
Gotta find a way, to find a way, when I'm there
Gotta find a way, a better way, I had better wait

Just because you're paranoid,
Don't mean they're not after you

Gotta find a way, to find a way, when I'm there
Gotta find a way, a better way, I had better wait
Gotta find a way, to find a way, when I'm there
Gotta find a way, a better way, I had better wait
Gotta find a way, to find a way, when I'm there
Gotta find a way, a better way, I had better wait
Gotta find a way, to find a way, when I'm there
Gotta find a way, ohhhhhaaaarrrrghhhhhh...
