BJP has been reduced to 240 plus seats in the 2024 general election. With the help of allies, the NDA has a comfortable 290 plus seats to form the government. Key factors being attributed for these results are the transfer of BSP votes in Uttar Pradesh to Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance, BJP's inability to utilise Vasundhara Raje's influence in Rajasthan in the way the party deployed Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the Madhya Pradesh campaign. Third factor for BJP's less than overwhelming result is being blamed on the splitting of regional parties like the Shiv Sena and NCP in Maharashtra, which drew sympathy for Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar but robbed the BJP of its 'underdog' tag. The results of the 18th Lok Sabha election have made Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu the key players on whom Narendra Modi will have to rely on in his third term as India's Prime Minister. While Modi has drawn level with Jawaharlal Nehru in terms of getting three consecutive mandates, this time Narendra Modi's skills will be on test to run a smooth coalition government.
