Описание к видео Tarantino says this is the best shot in any war film | Dunkirk (2017)

This scene is seared into my memory.

The way the bombs don’t fall but crawl toward Tommy (Fionn Whitehead), one by one, booming closer and closer, no cuts, just one continuous, merciless shot. He’s lying there in the sand, exposed, helpless, frozen with fear… and all we can do is brace alongside him. This is the moment Dunkirk stops being a war film and becomes an immersive experience. And before that: the screeching roar of the Stuka dive bombers as they menacingly enter frame, their noise not crafted for effect, but 100% real. The nightmarish planes that bombed the beach in 1940 were fitted deliberately with sirens, the infamous “Jericho Trumpets,” designed to terrorise as much as attack. And that sound, paired with Zimmer’s mounting, heart-pounding score, sends a primal chill through the audience. It’s the dread of death approaching in a straight line… and you can’t move. Watching this in IMAX, I remember the sound ricocheting off the walls, people jumping in their seats, ducking for cover as if they themselves were under enemy fire. It was stunning, visceral, and utterly terrifying.

Quentin Tarantino named Dunkirk his second favourite film of the 2010s, calling it pure “spectacle” and recalling the feeling of watching it in a packed West End cinema. “You become a collective,” he said. Reminding us that cinema, at its best, places you inside the story instead of simply showing it. Christopher Nolan’s direction strips war of glory and offers something more haunting: 300,000 soldiers, stranded with nowhere to run, stuck between the sea and the sky. Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance. All phenomenal. The tension is relentless, yet almost silent. Nolan uses dialogue sparingly, leaning instead on visceral imagery, propulsive editing, and roaring sound design that, according to real survivors, was louder than the actual bombings. That says everything.

Have you ever watched a film where the experience of watching was the story?
