We wanted to utilize the interesting quality of freehand whiteboard illustrations performed in-camera. So, I decided to build a rig where you can sit down, create and record your illustrations, edit and package your footage for delivery, all within the same workspace.

It's basically just an angled whiteboard with a camera on top. This prevents your head from getting into the frame. And by capturing the feed with a recording monitor it's easy to preview your performance, as you go along.

When shooting at higher resolution than your final format, you can crop your footage to create a tracking and zooming effect with automation in post.

You start out with a script or by listening to a recorded narrative, create a storyboard and make your choices.

You can do all sorts of things. Lift colors by using empty pens on painted areas. Use masking in post to extend your canvas to an infinite size. Place different objects on the board. And if you take a highres snapshot with the camera, it becomes a giant scanner for transferring graphics onto other media.

You can pull out the frames where your hand is visible to create a stop motion sequence. Of course, you can also use masking and transformation to animate your illustrations in post.

Whiteboards are wonderful immediate tools. Great for planning, great for testing and practicing your drawing skills. And when you incorporate whiteboards into an animated context, it reveals an exciting potential with a very short turnaround time for putting ideas into practice.
