With a wingspan of 6 feet, the great blue heron is one of Florida’s greatest natural masterpieces.


I was on my everyday bike ride when I came across a pond I usually go to when I go to the beach that’s home to multiple fish species and turtles (painted and Florida softshell turtles). Great blue herons will sometimes visit the pond and try their luck finding food there. This one was standing still on the riverbank and occasionally drinking water. I stayed low and kept quiet. Eventually, the heron felt like I was too close for comfort and it flew DIRECTLY onto the bridge over the pond. I was on that bridge at the same time, too.


The big bird was only a couple feet away from me. I wanted to get a good slow motion shot of it flying, so I crept up nice and slow. Staying quiet, taking gradual steps in long strides, I tried to get as close as possible without risking myself or the heron and far enough to avoid getting jabbed by its sharp pointed beak in case it felt like it needed to defend itself.


Fortunately, no one got hurt and I got what I consider my best footage yet.
