Voices in Action: Reflections from African, Caribbean, and Black Youth is a powerful
initiative under the Concentric Circles of Care (CCC) project, funded by United Way
East Ontario and led by Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre, in partnership
with Lowertown Community Resource Centre, Sandy Hill Community Health Centre,
Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre.
The Concentric Circles of Care project was created to foster healing, inclusion, and
belonging across Black, newcomer, and underserved communities in Ottawa. It began
as a response to the growing impact of gun violence on Burundian and Congolese
youth, with the goal of empowering youth and engaging them in meaningful,
transformative ways.
Building on this foundation, Voices in Action continued the journey of the Concentric
Circles of Care through creative youth expression, providing safe spaces for African,
Caribbean, and Black (ACB) youth to share their stories, reflect on challenges, and build
networks of mutual support.
In collaboration with the Ottawa School of Theatre, youth worked with an expert
facilitator to explore themes of identity, belonging, and hope through writing and
performance.
The program also included training in anti-hate advocacy and leadership development,
offering workshops on recognizing hate speech, combating racism, and strengthening
leadership skills. Through these sessions, participants gained confidence and practical
tools to become agents of positive change within their communities.
More than 30 youth participated, culminating in Voices in Action: Reflections from
African, Caribbean, and Black Youth, a moving video showcase of empowerment,
storytelling, and unity that celebrates the resilience and strength of ACB youth in our
Ottawa communities.
