George Sand was an incredible non-binary figure in history who has often been neglected. While many people may be familiar with Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac, George Sand was actually more famous than both of these authors combined at the age of 27.

Sand was a force to be reckoned with. She was confident and independent, and led a free and unconventional life that polarized her contemporaries. Nietzsche referred to her as a "writing cow who had something bad about her in the German sense," while Charles Baudelaire called her "stupid, heavy and garrulous." Despite these insults, Sand had many fans as well. André Maurois called her the voice of women in a time when women were silent, and Victor Hugo admitted to crying like a child when she died. Sand was also immortalized in the works of Balzac, Dostoevsky, and Walt Whitman.

So, who was George Sand and how did she manage to divide people so much?
