The Belief System That Makes You Powerless | Prof. Jiang Explains

In this profound lecture, Prof. Jiang Xueqin challenges one of the most fundamental beliefs of modern society: that science liberated humanity.

Prof. Jiang contrasts two worldviews that have shaped human history.
The first is the ancient polytheistic worldview, where fate, fortune, pride, and anger were understood as forces beyond human control. In this system, humans accepted uncertainty and focused on eudaimonia — living fully, flourishing, and becoming the best version of themselves.

The second worldview is the modern scientific worldview, which teaches that humans are merely synapses, memories, and chemical processes — fully responsible for their own fate. While this appears empowering, Prof. Jiang argues it was designed to do the opposite.

By placing all responsibility on the individual, modern systems isolate people, destroy collective action, and create dependence on authority. Depression, anxiety, and misery are no longer seen as social problems — they are framed as personal failures to be “treated” by experts.
