On a September day in 1862, Col. Edward Herrick Castle and his son, Ephraim, reunited at Willard's Hotel in Washington, D.C., after an absence of some months. They re-enacted the moment in this portrait at a local photographer's studio. We know this because of the inscription on the back, added by one of the most powerful women in the country. Here's the story.
