How to grow tulips 101

Are you tulips short or long?

Even if you know the basics of adequate sun, well draining, soil and consistent watering , there are two other key tips when it comes to growing tulips.

1. Tulips require a chill period. In Southern California, we don’t usually get enough chill to produce long stems. The trick here is to stick them in your fridge for at least 2 to 3 months to simulate what a winter would feel like for them.

2. Variety. Not all tulips are bred to have long stems. Watch my video again and you can see the taller tulips all look the same. That one is called Finola.

Also, growing for production is not the same as growing for a hedge row or a perennial flower bed. These were grown with not spacing, bulbs side by side.
