Blame it all on the Disney that when you think of genies, the first thing you think of the happy and singing blue figure without the lower torso from 1992 hit Aladdin. Robin Williams unique and amazing representation fo the character is remembered to this date, and it’s the first thing that comes to mind when people think of a genie. But that is not all that a genie is.
In Islam, while angels are made from light, men from the earth, Djinns are made from smokeless fire. They are bound to forever exist between the void of the world of angels and humans. And genies can be good or bad. The genie in Aladdin was a good one. Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster (1997) explores the bad side of the genie.

It follows the story of a genie, that goes by the name of the Wishmaster, who will fulfil your 3 wishes, but not as you would expect him to. That is what the movie starts with. In 1127 in Persia, when the Emperor asks the Wishmaster to make him see the wonder no one has seen before, the Wishmaster tortures, mutilates and even mutates people into dangerous creatures in the grand palace. It can be said it’s a wonder no one else has seen till now. That’s the Wishmaster for you.

Despite its low budget, the movie was an instant hit and was the 2nd most-watched movie on the opening weekend. It spawned a franchise, under which 3 sequels were made too. The following movies did not get as much attention as the 1997 original did, but the Wishmaster has become a memorable character.
