The third Future Materials Encounter explored the versatility of mycelium through the years-long experience of GROWN bio.

This biotechnology company based in the Netherlands has researched how mycelium (https://www.futurematerialsbank.com/m...) can be transformed into a structural, stable, and regenerative material that can function as compostable protective packaging, building material and in interior design, using just agricultural waste and little water.

During the workshop, participants had the possibility to gain insights into various possibilities of working with mycelium and in how this material invites to redefine the human role in the process of creation. By making their own samples, participants learnt how to grow mycelium and utilise it in their practices.

With a long history in sustainable packaging, GROWN bio has been working with the MycoComposite™ technology since 2016. After launching mushroom packaging in Europe, collaborations with designers were started to introduce a range of interior design items and artwork. Currently GROWN bio is working on a new innovation: an insulation panel that can be used to help the building industry’s transition to bio-based products.

Future Materials Encounters are a series of workshops and conversations around the materials of the Future Materials Bank. Each event in the series focuses on a specific material, staging a conversation between the maker and the audience.

The Future Materials Bank is an archive of materials that supports and promotes the transition towards ecologically conscious art and design practices. It is part of Future Materials, an initiative of the Nature Research department at the Jan van Eyck Academie.
