Donington Park - No Limits track day 31/08/20 ※ Novice BMW S1000R

This is the third video from my awesome first track day at Donington last year... I think I've milked it enough now! Actually this one is really another Picture-in-Picture video experiment so I can improve my knowledge of Davinci Resolve, the video editor I use.

Not only did I use Resolve, I had to use Insta360 One X Studio, GoPro Quik, Dashware and some tiny app made by a GoPro user to get around a limitation/bug in that Dashware program. Hardware used on the bike; Insta360 One X, GoPro Hero 6, Sony FDR X1000V, Zoom H1n.

Getting the telemetry was fun... the problem with Dashware is that it cannot import and merge together multiple GoPro video clips from a Hero 6 and also import all of the GPS data at the same time. Actually, stepping back a bit, first I had to install GoPro Quik in order to use one of its files in Dashware to even have any hope of getting GPS data at all! What I then had to do was dig around on the internet for a solution to GPS problem. I downloaded a little homemade app which takes the individual GPS files that were created and combines them so Dashware can sync the result to the video. Phew!

The telemetry gauges were a laugh-a-minute too... I wanted the gauges separate to the riding footage with a transparent background so I could import them separately into Resolve and mess about with them if I had to. Dashware exports the gauge screen as a series of transparent PNG files; one for every frame of video. I had to import over 115,000 of these PNG's into Resolve!! Luckily Resolve can treat groups of these files a bit like video clips so they weren't too bad to manage.

There are easier ways to do this! However they cost more money and - as is often the case with me - if I can find a way to do it with what I've already got lying around, it makes me happy. Even if it takes longer and sometimes frustrates the hell out of me 😊

By the way even though I have a lap timer in the video, I wasn't going after laptimes on the day. The lap timer is just a nice side product of the GPS data. Mind you, I am happy that I got under two minutes on my first visit to Donny 😊 I'm sure the bike could go ten seconds faster around here... I just hope that I've got the minerals! You can tell with my short-shifting mid corner I don't trust traction control enough... I'm sure I can push the bike a lot harder than I did on this visit.

You can see how much of a little liar the speedo on my bike is too!
