Today, we're going on a tour of some of the lesser known archaeological sites in Cusco, Peru. After taking a tour of the more popular sites at Ollantaytambo and the Sacred Valley a few days ago (   • 🦙 SO MANY LLAMAS | Sacred Valley Tour of P...  ), we are now headed towards the southern part of Cusco where there many incredible but HIDDEN attractions.

First up, we visit Saint Peter the Apostle of Andahuaylillas (or colloquially the ANDAHUAYLILLAS CHURCH), known as the "Sistine Chapel of the Americas". Construction of the church started in the late 16th century as the Spanish cemented their conquest over the Inca Empire. The interior and exterior walls are decorated with beautiful murals, and ordained with gold leaf. While pictures and videos are not allowed inside, it was a amazing to marvel that something so beautiful could have come from so much pain and persecution.

Our second stop (and probably our favorite ruin in the Cusco area) was to PIKILLAQTA. Nicknamed the "City of Lice", this massive city was inhabited by the Wari, a pre-Inca civilization thought to be the first to invent the architectural concept of streets and plazas. The Wari flourished in Peru between 500 to 1000 AD, but a century long drought weakened the empire and paved the way for the rise of the Inca.

Last official stop of our day trip, was to the Inca water temple of Tipón. This incredible archeological site is thought to have been built for spiritual or religious purposes. Our guide told us that the Inca were known to ingest/smoke certain hallucinogens , and I can't think of a more suitable spot to partake in such rituals.

Our BONUS site visit of the day after returning from our tours was to the Inca citadel of SAQSAYWAMAN, located just north of the Cusco city limits. This HUMONGOUS ruin was built in the 15th century as a fortress high on the plateau overlooking the capital of the Inca Empire. Much of the site was demolished by the Spanish for building materials elsewhere - today, only the largest of the stones remain. In 1983, Saqsaywaman was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, for international recognition and protection.

Don't forget to try out 2 of Peru's most iconic foods as well - ceviche and anticuchos!
