"The war started…nobody gave us any notice": A report from Ukrainian-controlled Sudzha

Dozens of people are now living in a basement in a town near Sudzha — a district center in Russia’s Kursk Region. The basement’s residents claim they had little interest in politics until the war arrived at their doorstep a few long weeks ago.

The Insider visited Sudzha — becoming the first independent Russian-language outlet to deliver a video report from areas controlled by Ukrainian forces — and spoke with local residents. The war, which unexpectedly arrived at their homes, appears to have been a profound shock for the locals. Yet many continue to believe that Vladimir Putin would never bomb their city. Interestingly, many of those interviewed are speaking to the correspondent in a mix of Ukrainian and Russian.
