BouGear - Appalaches Cabinets - APP212H - 2x12 Diagonal - Part 1

Today on BouGear, I have the honor of testing a 2x12 by Appalaches Cabinets. This is a new company based in Saint-Paul-de-Montminy, Quebec, specializing in the manufacture and design of custom cabinets.

When Eric Lachance approached me this summer so that I could test their APP212H, I wondered from what angle I was going to attack this capsule. After thinking about it, equipped with my preamps and three SM57s, I decided to send a multitude of signal types to the cabinet in order to evaluate its frequency response and its sound-tolerance. I was quite surprised by this “mountain candidate”, particularly by the following two points:

Projection: The projection enhanced by the diagonal positioning of the speakers is probably what struck me most on my first try. I didn't think I'd notice it so much. I appreciated this enhanced projection, which can be a great help at jams or shows to ensure an enhanced sound reference, as the sound travels more easily to the ears.

Frequency response: I've heard a lot of Vintage 30s over the years, and am also familiar with the model of those currently in the cabinet. I had the impression of rediscovering them from a new angle inside the Appalaches cabinet. The cabinet's signature certainly interacts in an interesting way with the frequencies around Low / Low-Mid. The cabinet handles low frequencies superbly and stays tight. I play mainly in D Standard, and sometimes in Drop C. No vibrations detected during my tests.

Special mention for the interesting dimensions, which certainly interact with the cabinet's sound signature. I can't wait to test the 4x12 😉! Special mention also to the logo and the overall aesthetics of the product: a real treat for the eyes as well as the ears.

Many thanks to Eric and his colleague for their confidence. I wish them every success in this superb adventure that is Appalaches Cabinets.

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas 😊! Stay tuned for Part 2 of this review coming out next week to celebrate the New Year.
