New Decoy Carvings And Big News!

While this video shows something new and different from me, the longer video on my YouTube channel announces some big news ‪@wilsonwildlifesculpture3980‬ . I carved these Dowitcher (shorebird) decoys from pine heart. While I left parts natural to see the wood’s beautiful grain, I painted other parts with translucent layers of acrylics. After finishing, I asked my good friend and well known decoy carver, Ernie Mills, if I was doing something new. He said, it has been done many times. Lol!
Well, Ernie should know. Originally from Delaware, he is 90 years old. In fact, Ernie is a full time decoy carver who carves with a hatchet with masterful technique. His work is in the collection of the Smithsonian. While I’m fortunate to own a few of his decoys, I’m even more honored to have him as a friend and mentor for the past 35 years.
