A History of Giant Monster Movies

Описание к видео A History of Giant Monster Movies

Giant Movie Monsters! Where did the idea come from? What techniques did they use? What plot devices were employed, to make a Monster Movie? In this short montage of films, I attempt to go though some of the landmarks, and show how the idea of Giant Monsters evolved from paper to screen.

This was meant to be a small student project, designed for college kids to catch up on a bit of movie history. I'd heard James Rolfe talk about all kinds of Monster Movies, as we share the same passion in old movies, but I wondered why he never made more educational films. Perhaps to prompt him to do so, I got the idea to make this, and perhaps make a start on that journey.

My first post of call, and my Bible to this very day on the subject, was this web resource :

I watched all the other films about Giant Monster Movies (GMMs), of which I think I found 4, and noticed these were often biased towards certain types of huge monsters, or went all over the place without telling the story of why one thing inspired another. I knew I wanted to arrange a timeline of movies, to see which came first, the Monster or the egg?? Watching and collecting the films took a long time, especially as Im also into so many other genres of old movies. By the end, I had 60 GMMs in the folder ready to grab small clips, and also 43 Human Mutation films, and 42 Sci-Fi movies, which I split off away from these. I guess I could have included more of the B-movies, or more of the Gojira films, but those are really a specialised subject and I want to go more general on the subject.

The Narration was all done in real time, and took 30mins on the day I recorded it. I didnt have any notes or anything, and just talked about each movie as it comes up. If this had been scripted, the talk would have been a very detailed analysis of the mutations of the genre, spawning sub-genre of its own, and watching as the little offspring grow! So the worst thing about this film is by far the narration. I was going to post a disclaimer at the top of the description:

"If anyone want to use this for their own productions or presentations, just mute my voice, stand up, and do it - go ahead! This material has NO copyright issues according to youtube, so you can public display this, copy clone or reproduce this, and you can re-post this on your own blog or channel with my full permission!, as long as its all creative commons and no money is charged, of course." James - dont charge for this stuff, just make the goddam films!

After production, I showed this film to a test audience, and the feedback was mostly positive. I was asked why I didnt include X and Y, and mostly this was limited to interest, time, and availability. Of all the ones I missed, Moby Dick is the only one I wish I had included. I got a clip ready for this, and made a voiceover for it, but it would have gone in the timeline before IT Conquered The World (with Lee Van Cleef!), and messed things up visually and story-wise, so I had to leave this (Jaws) stem of evolution to one side. I didnt want to dwell on Ray Harryhausen or anything really in particular, and those subjects make better films on their own. If I make another film even remotely like this one, it will not be GMMs.

If you have any comments, criticisms or insults you'd like to make, particularly about my appalling narration and general total incompetence on this production, please dont hesitate to spew them out below.

My slime to yours, Dan.
