Hello fungifanatics!
I'll have videos for all 3 of the main cullinary Morel species found in Central and Eastern Canada. I'll show you how to distinguish what species you find and where to find it successfully, year after year!
Although Morchella deliciosa refers to the European variety, there is most certainly a North American variation, and for now, I will refer to these as M.deliciosa. These are not the same species as Golden/Blonde Morels, although many people argue that White Morels are simply young Blonde Morels. I believe I demonstrate the difference fairly effectively in this short video. White Morels are my favourite Morel to find, but they are also the most seldom found. They tend to have a short window for fruiting in my region, popping up after the Black Morels, but before/during the Blonde season. Unlike Golden Morels, you will not find these growing with Apple trees, they grow predominantly with White Ash, and occasionally with Maple. Unlike Black & Blonde Morels, White Morels do not need soil with a high sand content. They are more than happy growing out of dark nutritious soils, found in thick hardwood forests. The same White Morel you saw in the video, is now available in petri dish or liquid culture form @ fungicopia.com
