Exploring the Nuragic Tomb of Li Loighi | Ancient Sardinian Burial Site

Join me as we explore the Nuragic collective tomb of Li Loighi, a fascinating ancient burial site constructed between 1800 and 1350 BC. This remarkable tomb features a long funerary corridor and a ceremonial space called the exedra, where funeral rites and rituals were conducted.

Key highlights we’ll explore include:

The Semicircular Façade: Made of large sunken slabs, the façade is centered around a 3.75-meter-tall monolithic stele, symbolizing the gate to the afterlife. A small hatch at the base of the stele was used for delivering offerings to the deceased.

Funeral Rites and Ceremonies: Community meals and offerings of food and drink were central to the funerary practices here. Numerous ceramic vessels found at the site indicate these meals were held in honor of the dead and ancestors.

Funerary Corridor: The deceased—regardless of age, gender, or status—were buried in the long corridor, accessible through removable slabs or wooden elements that once covered the tomb.

The tomb was protected by a large 27-meter-long tumulus of earth and rubble, which also incorporated an older gallery tomb dating back to 2100-1800 BC. This site is a significant testament to the communal and spiritual practices of the Nuragic civilization, reflecting the deep connection between the living and their ancestors.
