Rahstrakuta Empire

After the fall of the Early Chalukyas, a powerful dynasty rose from the ashes of the Deccan — the Rashtrakutas (753–982 CE).
Known for their military might, tolerance, and architectural wonders, they ruled over vast regions of India, from the Narmada to the Kaveri, and even extended northward into Kannauj.

They established their capital at Manyakheta (modern-day Malkhed, Karnataka).

✨ Major Emperors of the Rashtrakuta Dynasty:

1. Dantidurga (c. 735–756 CE)

Founder of the dynasty.

Defeated Kirtivarman II of the Chalukyas.

Unified the Deccan and laid the foundation of Rashtrakuta power.



2. Krishna I (756–773 CE)

Extended the empire further south.

Built the magnificent Kailasa Temple at Ellora, one of India’s greatest rock-cut wonders.



3. Govinda II (773–780 CE)

Faced internal revolts but retained control.

Briefly overshadowed by his brother Dhruva.



4. Dhruva Dharavarsha (780–793 CE)

Expanded northward, defeating the Gurjara-Pratiharas and Palas.

Brought prestige to the empire with victories across India.



5. Govinda III (793–814 CE)

The Rashtrakuta Empire reached its zenith.

Defeated rulers from the north to the south; called “Jagat Tunga” (Lofty among the world).

Even received tributes from distant kingdoms.



6. Amoghavarsha I (814–878 CE)

A peace-loving and cultured ruler.

Wrote “Kavirajamarga”, the first literary work in Kannada.

Shifted focus to administration and learning.

Known as the Ashoka of South India for his tolerance and wisdom.



7. Krishna II (878–914 CE)

Faced challenges but maintained stability.



8. Indra III (914–929 CE)

Restored Rashtrakuta power, defeating Mahipala of Kannauj.

His reign saw renewed expansion.



9. Krishna III (939–967 CE)

The last great ruler.

Conquered Tanjore and extended influence into the south.

His reign marked the final golden age of the Rashtrakutas.


🏛️ Art & Architecture

The Kailasa Temple at Ellora remains their greatest legacy — carved from a single rock, representing Mount Kailash, abode of Lord Shiva.

Patronized Kannada and Sanskrit literature.

Promoted religious tolerance — supported Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Jainism.


📜 Legacy

The Rashtrakutas were not only warriors but builders, patrons of art, and unifiers of the Deccan.
Their rule marked one of the most stable and artistically rich periods in early medieval Indian history.
