'I feel kicked in the stomach' - Macclesfield Town fans hurt but not defeated by club's closure

Macclesfield Town fans remained remarkably stoic on Thursday after their club was force to close due to debts exceeding around $650,000 USD earlier this week.

The ''winding up'' petition had been adjourned a number of times this year but on Wednesday the court did not grant a further eight week extension as requested by club owner Amar Alkadhi.

The club, based in the town of Macclesfield some 20 miles outside Manchester, was established in 1874.

It played in the National League - the fifth tier of English football.

"It had an air of inevitability about it," said Jon Smart of the club's Supporters Trust.

"Part of me felt relieved, part of me felt like I'd been totally kicked in the stomach and I wasn't sure if I was going to get up," he said.

Jordan Davies, a season holder at the club's Moss Rose ground, thinks football will continue in some guise in Macclesfield.

"We're obviously absolutely devastated but there's so much love for football in Macclesfield and this community that, in my mind, there's no doubt that this won't be the end," he vowed.
