Lucia Joyce, the only daughter of James Joyce, is a fascinating, and tragic, figure. Despite her early promise (studying dance with Isadora Duncan, a relationship with Joyce's friend Samuel Beckett) she struggled with mental illness and was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia (by Joyce's friend Carl Jung) and spent the rest of her life in institutions.
