Sanjiv Bhasin, the man who was once considered a trusted voice in the Indian stock market, regularly seen on TV channels like Zee Business, ET Now, and CNBC Awaaz, and followed by lakhs of retail investors on Telegram, has now been officially banned by SEBI in one of the most explosive market manipulation cases of the decade.

According to SEBI’s 149-page interim order dated June 14, 2025, Bhasin is not just banned from accessing the securities market — he’s been exposed as the mastermind of a front-running and pump-and-dump scam that raked in illegal profits worth ₹11.37 crore between 2020 and 2024, in a clear case of abusing media influence for personal gain.

He misused his powerful role first as Director (2017–2022) and later as Consultant (2022–2024) at IIFL Securities, and combined it with his massive media and social media following to trap unsuspecting investors in a loop of manipulation.

Here’s how the scam worked: Bhasin and his close network — which included family members like Lalit Bhasin and Ashish Kapur, and key dealers like Rajiv Kapoor, Jagat Singh, Praveen and Babita Gupta — would first purchase shares in select companies through shell entities like Gemini Portfolios, Venus Portfolios, HB Stockholdings, and Leo Portfolios, all of which were either family-owned or had suspicious cross-linkages.

Minutes or hours later, Bhasin would go on TV or Telegram and "recommend" these same stocks to the public, triggering massive retail buying that pushed up the price. And right after the spike, the same group would dump their pre-acquired shares and walk away with profits — all while the public was left holding the bag.

To top it all, in a bizarre twist that feels like a plot from a Netflix scam drama, Bhasin started rebranding himself as an "astro trader" in early 2025 — posting astrology-based stock advice and predictions on social media, possibly in an attempt to disassociate himself from traditional financial regulations or to create a legal escape hatch.

But SEBI wasn’t fooled. After receiving investor complaints in late 2023, SEBI carried out search-and-seizure raids in June 2024 across Delhi NCR, gathering rock-solid evidence and uncovering how the scam ran for over four years with media platforms being used as a tool to influence retail sentiment.

It’s also a massive wake-up call for every retail investor in this country who blindly follows TV wale experts or Telegram gurus thinking they’re in it for your benefit. They’re not. Most of them are in it for themselves.

They will smile, speak confidently, even throw in some technical jargon to sound smart — but behind the scenes, their trades are already done, and by the time you're buying, they’re selling. This is not a conspiracy theory — this is an officially documented, regulator-validated fraud.
