The Volkswagen Magotan is the long-wheelbase saloon version of the eighth generation Volkswagen Passat D-segment midsize saloon. The Magotan went on sale at the first quarter of 2005, & was launched at the 2005 Beijing Auto Show.

The first generation Magotan launched in 2005 Beijing Auto Show. The Magotan was started out as a rebadged sixth generation Volkswagen Passat for the Chinese market. Volkswagen decided to use the Magotan nameplate in the Chinese market as Volkswagen already used the Passat nameplate for a model based on the first generation Škoda Superb. Later, an estate version of the Magotan was added to the range, & it is marketed as the Variant. The estate version is fully imported from Germany.

Later, the Magotan received a facelift in 2010, along with the facelifted sixth generation Passat. Along with the facelift, the Magotan receives a longer wheelbase measuring 2,812 mm with a longer length measuring 4,865 mm to accomodate a larger rear legroom. Later, the facelifted Variant (estate version of the Magotan) was launched, & will be marketed as the Magotan Variant in the facelifted model, & will be locally-assembled in Changchun, China, & will be no longer fully imported from Europe. Later, Volkswagen added the crossover estate version of the Magotan named the Magotan Alltrack. After the launch of the Magotan Variant, the Magotan range was added with a coupé saloon version based on the Passat CC, marketed as the Magotan CC.

The third generation Magotan debuted in the 2017 China Auto Show. The third generation model was larger than the facelifted first generation Magotan with adding 2,871 mm wheelbase & a 4,866 mm length, to accomodate larger rear legroom. The height is also slightly extended by 57.6 inches. Later, the estate version of the third generation Magotan will be fully imported from Germany under the name Volkswagen Variant. Later, the GTE Plug-in Hybrid version was launched in 2020 facelift, & was previewed by a concept car named the Magotan GTE Concept. A plug-in hybrid version for the Variant estate was called the Variant GTE, & was later discontinued for the 2021 model year. An Alltrack version of the Variant was available as the Variant Alltrack, later discontinued in 2021, leaving the R-Line version as its top-of-the-line trim level.
