Body Cam Video of Police Saving Bobcat From DogFighting . - An officer of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) entered a property in response to a complaint from Hillsborough County Animal Control. An animal control officer/investigator had initially contacted a family member of the defendant during an investigation (Hillsborough County Animal Control Case # 23-154765) regarding a stolen dog. The family member informed the investigator about the presence of an alligator and a bobcat on the property. The family member escorted the animal control officer onto the property, where the officer visually identified an alligator in a large tub and a bobcat in a cage, both in plain view. The animal control officer then notified the FWC officer, who responded after reviewing pictures sent by the animal control officer of the caged bobcat, verifying it as a Class II captive wildlife creature.Upon entering the property, the FWC officer observed the alligator in a large tub containing extremely dirty water and floating pieces of decayed material. The alligator exhibited behavior consistent with prolonged captivity, such as swimming toward the officer and remaining at the water’s surface, a common response when an alligator has been fed in captivity. The alligator was subsequently captured and placed in a cage for eventual release into the wild. The officer also observed a caged bobcat on the property. Bobcats are classified as Class II captive wildlife creatures, subject to specific permitting, caging, facility safety, and care requirements for the animal’s welfare and public safety. The bobcat was chained inside the cage with a tight domestic animal collar that required trauma shears for removal. The cage lacked water and was filled with decomposing bird and fish carcasses, offering minimal space for the bobcat to move without coming into contact with rotting remains. The area around the caged bobcat had no preventative safety measures, such as perimeter fences or barriers that met F.A.C. criteria, to restrict individuals from approaching or making direct contact with the animal through the cage.An FWC Officer Specialist and a Captive Wildlife Investigator assisted in the safe capture of the bobcat. Both the bobcat and the alligator were released back into the wild unharmed.
