I HATE EVERY MEMBER WHO VOTED FOR ME TO WATCH IT (1990) FOR THE FIRST TIME

*Tim Curry’s It*(1990) is the miniseries that introduced a generation of kids to the idea that clowns aren’t just creepy—they’re downright terrifying. Based on Stephen King’s novel, the story follows a group of childhood friends, the Losers’ Club, as they face off against Pennywise, a shape-shifting entity who takes the form of a clown to lure his prey. But let’s be honest: the real reason we’re all still talking about this adaptation decades later is Tim Curry, who takes the role of Pennywise and delivers a performance that’s equal parts hilarious, menacing, and unforgettable.

Compared to today’s horror villains who rely on jump scares and gallons of CGI, Curry’s Pennywise is terrifying because he feels uncomfortably real. One minute he’s cracking jokes with that unsettling grin, and the next, he’s ready to rip your face off—and somehow, you believe he could do either. Sure, the miniseries itself shows its age with some cheesy effects and a pacing that drags, but Curry’s performance makes up for every foam-rubber monster and awkward 90s haircut. It is a reminder that sometimes, all you need to scare the life out of people is a clown suit, a balloon, and an actor who knows how to make you laugh right before he makes you scream.

The second half of Tim Curry’s It (1990) is where things get... well, let’s just say it goes off the rails in the way only a 90s Stephen King miniseries can. Set 30 years after the Losers' Club first battled Pennywise, the now-adult versions of our heroes return to Derry to confront the evil clown once and for all. But while the first half of the miniseries gave us an unsettling, nostalgia-soaked battle between kids and a terrifying clown, the second half shifts into something far more bizarre—complete with awkward adult reunions, strange cosmic lore, and a final battle against what can only be described as a giant stop-motion spider with a clown complex.

Compared to modern horror conclusions, which often try to neatly wrap things up or go for a big shocking twist, the second half of It is more of a grab-bag of 90s weirdness. The emotional stakes are there, especially with Tim Curry still bringing his A-game as the iconic Pennywise, but the tone shifts from horror to something bordering on campy as the characters take on not just their past trauma, but some seriously clunky special effects. Still, Curry remains the MVP, and the film keeps you invested—if only to see just how wild and strange the finale can get. It’s a conclusion that’s as memorable for its quirks as it is for its scares, reminding you that sometimes, the scariest thing isn’t the monster—it’s the special effects budget.
