Blind Faith was a British blues rock supergroup formed in March 1969. After recording an album and performing several live concerts, the lineup disbanded in December of that same year. The group was born from an idea by Eric Clapton, former guitarist of Cream, and Steve Winwood, former guitarist and keyboardist of Traffic who had just abandoned their respective bands at the time. They began composing and rehearsing their first songs with Ginger Baker, former Cream drummer, in March 1969, both at Clapton's home in Surrey and at the Morgan studios in London. Some of these recordings would later be included in the second expanded edition of the Blind Faith album, which appeared over thirty years after the group's breakup. Subsequently, Ric Grech, Family's bassist, joined the three, but he only officially joined the band in May of that same year. Coordination and supervision was entrusted to producer Jimmy Miller.The debut took place with a live concert in Hyde Park on 7 June 1969 which achieved good success with the public, even if the musical criticism of the time highlighted, alongside the high level of quality of the group, the limited nature of its repertoire. Clapton and Winwood had in fact preferred not to use the old production of Cream and Traffic so that it would not be thought that Blind Faith was a simple replica of the two famous British groups. The following June 12, a new concert at Madison Square Garden in New York was warmly received by the American public, who loudly requested the performance of the old hits of the two founders of the band. The day ended with some accidents, the causes of which have never been clarified, which required police intervention: Ginger Baker suffered a bruise and Winwood's piano was completely destroyed. In subsequent concerts, both European (in Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, and Finland) and American, the band achieved considerable success, even if they were forced to include songs by Cream and Traffic to please the audience. The band also had the opportunity to play at the Woodstock festival but Clapton found himself opposed by the band members who didn't want to hear about it, so he preferred to give up to dedicate himself to the band's career but his last performance was the one which took place in Honolulu, Hawaii , August 24, 1969.In September, their only album, Blind Faith, was released both in Europe and in the United States, which, despite its success, also marked the dissolution of the band[1]. It seems that Eric Clapton, more interested in taking care of the compositions of the Delaney & Bonnie and Friends group, which accompanied Blind Faith on tour, than those of his own group, had progressively distanced himself from it, thus entering into conflict with Winwood, forced to take care of the musical production and arrangements alone. Blind Faith officially ceased to exist in December 1969
Blind Faith, the group's only album, was recorded on various occasions between the spring and summer of 1969. The work was completed only in the month of August in the recording studios of Atlantic Records. It was released in September, marketed by the Atco sublabel (belonging to Atlantic at the time), and was a notable success. For several weeks it was at the top of the charts in its sector (Pop music): for two weeks both in Great Britain (Official Albums Chart), where it won a gold record, and in the United States (Billboard 200), for four weeks in Canada, Holland and Norway and half a million copies were sold in the first month alone.
Strong controversy was caused by the cover of the album, created by the famous photographer Bob Seidemann, in which an eleven-year-old girl, Mariora Goschen, appears, half naked and with a model airplane in her hand. The plane, whose strange shape made it resemble a male genital organ, was interpreted by most as a true phallic symbol. The scandal exploded and numerous religious and social associations attempted to boycott the marketing of the album in various ways.
